the simple answer to this is: jailbreaking your ipod will immediately void your warranty. however, by resetting your ipod and reverting it back to the factory status, apple would never know that you’ve jailbreaked it. and yes, updates do work on a jailbraked ipod, just be sure to get the most recent update, as a previous update counteracted the jailbreak itself.

downloading and installing several applications can severely reduce your memory. be careful not to install too many, as they will basically just waste space. if this is not your problem, which it very well might not be (i doubt you installed nearly 15gb of apps), you should consider resetting your device, therefore reverting it to the out-of-the-package state and try the jailbreak again.

the ipod touch comes with a basic version of firmware. it is always updated via itunes, and i seriously doubt apple will be re-releasing the ipod touch and/or the iphone with completely up-to-date firmware. the key is to do the jailbreak, then update the firmware. you might find it interesting that apple released a version of firmware that blocked this jailbreak crack from working, but they received so many complaints that they ended up allowing it once again.

the jailbreak, or hack, basically installs a new application onto your ipod touch called “installer.” this program enables you to download and install programs from third-party sources (aka, non-apple sources that the company probably doesn’t want you using). recently, iphone applications have hit the internet, so now you can install several applications that they “left out” of the ipod, including google maps, stocks, and weather.
